  • Additional information:
Arthur was welsh-born and raised in Ferndale in the Rhondda Valley. He was one of 5 boys (Wilfred V, Libert Harry, Frank D, Arthur F, William E) and one girl. Three of the five boys (including Arthur) were killed in the 2nd World War - Wilfred, also in the Royal Artillery, in Africa and (Libert) Harry, also in the Royal Artillery, in a tragic accident hitch-hiking home in Lincolnshire.
Arthur worked as a clerk prior to joining up. He was stationed near Banbury and met his future wife at a dance (possibly at Wincotts). They intended to settle in Banbury after the war, and their daughter was born in the family home in North Bar. Arthur had also decided that once the war was over he would train as a vicar.

Arthur was killed in the battle of Arnhem in September 1944 aged 24 years. He was a gunner in the British 1st Airborne Division; sadly he does not have a known grave but is buried in an unknown grave.
Arthur's daughter, Jennifer, has visited Arnhem twice and was presented with a special medal gifted from the people of Arnhem. Arthur also had 8 campaign medals.
